Hey everyone! This week I'm here to share with you my submission for the #SoundoleChillOut2019 competition. I'm really excited to hear all the wonderful work people are going to create this year. I had such an incredible time working on my submission for last year and had to pleasure of meeting and discovering tons of incredible artists through the competition.
For my submission, I decided to arrange a piece from Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. The piece is usually referred to as the "Luma Theme" or Rosalina's Storybook and occurs at the very start of the game. Ever since I played Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, I've absolutely adored the gorgeous "Disneyesque" melodies throughout the soundtrack, and this piece was always a huge standout to me. I just loved the sweet and intimate feeling the original conveyed and I wanted to try and capture that in my rendition, while also attempting to add a bit of my own style in to the mix. The most significant addition I made in this arrangement is in the middle section, which expands the main melody out into some very different harmonic material. It was a joy trying to blend the original piece with something slightly different. I was originally working on this as a much larger scale project, but I eventually decided something simple and more atmospheric would be much more in line with the "chilled out" nature of the competition.
The video portion of the piece is fairly straightforward and simple but I actually got to experiment with some new tools throughout the production of this video. Katie and I made the investment in "Keyscape", which is this incredible suite of vintage electronic keyboards. This particular patch is a highly detailed recreation of the Vintage Vibe Electric Piano, which has such an interesting tonal character. I experimented with several different instruments before settling on the unique sound of the Vintage Vibe.
I also had a blast experimenting with some lighting effects in this video. I set some RGB leds up during the shoot and it resulted in some really interesting atmospheric effects on camera. This lighting setup is something I will continue to experiment with in videos to come, but will most likely not use it unless it fits the tone of the video.
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this one! I would love to do some more Mario Galaxy music in the future. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
Cheers!
