470Mario turns 40, wow.
I caught the Nintendo Direct this morning and truthfully, I wasn't immediately interested in playing most of the titles they showcased. Granted I have zero free time these days haha, but they also felt angled towards the youth of this planet. Is this what aging adults felt in the 80s when they saw the original Mario Bros and Nintendo drop?
But I know a ton of kids (and ppl of all ages, of course!) will get into these new games and start (or continue) a journey that, perhaps for most, will last a lifetime. And that's awesome. Surely that's not unlike what the Nintendo and all those OG franchises unlocked for us old heads. We played the original. My NES still works. The game still loads. I still think back to the levels and music sometimes. How cool is it that a franchise like this, a fandom like this, can endure for so long? It's entertained and inspired millions during what is essentially my entire life, and even if I don't have the hours anymore to play every last new piece of content, the product lives on. New persons will begin at World 1. Maybe they'll play forever. Or if not, maybe they'll still be empowered to express their gaming and pop culture passions in other ways, like we do here with Mega Man content. The fire is always initially lit somewhere. I tip my cap to the Mario IP, because it was one of our starting points. 40 years later and still going strong. Not every franchise can say that. Sometimes art has a way of waning. So given that, I hope to see Mario content still kicking ass 40 more years in the future!
Here's an 8-bit Castle theme from the Super Mario World SNES game. It's been covered a million times, but I thought this felt the most Mega Man to me. :) Happy anniversary, and thank you for all the memories and inspiration!
