A playthrough of Virgin Interactive's 1993 basketball game for the SNES, Super Slam Dunk.

Played an exhibition game as LA versus Minnesota.

Park Place Productions, the developer of Super Slam Dunk, also headed up the development on the excellent John Madden Football on the Sega Genesis.

This time, with a Magic Johnson endorsement in-hand, they set out to do a basketball title on the SNES, though for some reason, while the Japanese version carried the name Magic Johnson, they dropped it from the title of the US version. Whatever. Let me save you the suspense. It's not as good as Madden. Nowhere near close.

It does have a few cool features. There is some commentary by Chick Hearn, and though his comments are fairly limited and basic in nature, it's still neat to hear them on an SNES cart. The graphics are nice and clear (and the portrait of Magic speaking at the beginning of the game is pretty damned funny to watch), but the game only shows half the court at once. That on its own is just fine - the purple arrows do a good job of telling you where you're out-of-view teammates are. The problem comes with moving from one side of the court to the other - the entire screen does this jarring, choppy rotation thing (it doesn't look like Mode 7 - they really should have used that instead!) that is totally disorienting and confusing, not to mention it breaks the pace of the game since it freezes the action as it does the effect.

I'd certainly go with NCAA over this one, but if you really insist on a game with a NBA superstar endorsement, go with Jordan vs. Bird or NBA Live 96. This isn't bad, but it's just so dull and lifeless compared to many of the SNES bball games out there.
