A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 light gun rail shooter for the SNES, Battle Clash.

Anything that required the SuperScope (or most any other SNES peripheral, for that matter) seemed to be instantly relegated to obscurity, no matter how good it might have been.

Battle Clash and its sequel, Metal Combat, are two of the biggest casualties of this. Developed by Nintendo R&D1 with Nintendo's unsung hero Gunpei Yokoi at the helm, Nintendo's first-person rail shooters scream high production values and a real attention to detail. The characters are huge and zoom across the screen at some pretty impressive speeds, and there tons of little things that really bring it to life, especially in the backgrounds and in the way everything shows varying degrees of damage during a fight. It's all backed by a pretty too notch soundtrack, even if the sound of explosions and metallic clangs drown it out most the time.

It reminds me a great deal of Punch-Out and Teleroboxer. You fight a line-up of Not-Gundams working your way to the top, and each one has specific weaknesses that have to be exploited to take them down quickly. They all telegraph their moves through sound and animation cues, and timing is everything. If it weren't for having to use a AA-battery hungry plastic bazooka, I dare suggest this might've been a huge hit.

Even with the clunky gun, the game design really shines. It's got all of Nintendo's trademark charm and quality to it, and deserves to be remembered.

Oh, and if you want to play it without a SuperScope and tube TV, load it up through Snes9xgx on the Wii. It plays amazingly well with the super-accurate Wii-mote in the Zapper shell. I quite prefer it to the original, in all honesty.
