Super Sprint Longplay 2 (NES Version)
Super Sprint Longplay 2 (NES Version) -
Super Sprint is a top-down arcade racing game released by Atari in 1986.
The game puts you behind the wheel of a Formula One-style race car, competing against computer opponents and up to two other players simultaneously. What sets Super Sprint apart from other racing games of its time is the combination of skillful driving and strategic resource management. Between races, you collect wrenches that serve as currency to upgrade your vehicle - you can improve your traction, top speed, or turbo boost capability.
The tracks themselves are cleverly designed with various hazards and obstacles. You'll encounter oil slicks that send cars spinning, water puddles that slow you down, and tornado-like obstacles that can wreck your vehicle entirely. Some tracks feature jumps, and there are occasional bonus stages where you race through a more challenging course for extra points and upgrades.
The arcade version featured crisp, colorful graphics and smooth gameplay that made the racing feel immediate and responsive. The Atari computer ports maintained much of this quality, preserving the tight controls and visual clarity that made the game so engaging.
The NES version I'm playing today brings this experience to Nintendo's console. While it captures the essential gameplay and remains genuinely fun to play, it doesn't quite match the polish of the arcade original or the Atari home computer versions. The hardware limitations are apparent, but it's still an enjoyable port that delivers the core Super Sprint experience.
I actually published a longplay of the NES version before, completing all tracks twice, but I wasn't entirely happy with my performance. I kept feeling like I could do better, so today I finally sat down and put together a much stronger run that I'm way more satisfied with.
