Last night, at QuakeCon, ‪@svKaiser‬ shared the stage with all of the big wigs at id Software to announce Doom things they have been working on. For a bit of historical context, ‪@svKaiser‬ started his first Doom 64 adaptation back in 2003 and after that he began reverse engineering the game. ‪@erickvasquez9463‬ would eventually finish reverse engineering Doom 64 and that lead to ‪@jnmartin84‬ porting Doom 64 to the Sega Dreamcast. Meanwhile ‪@svKaiser‬ would be hired at ‪@Nightdivestudios‬ to do ports of classic games with their team. ‪@Nightdivestudios‬ would pitch to id Software about rereleasing Doom 64 and work together for the first time. This eventually came to fruition on the KEX engine (K as in Kaiser) and included Lost Levels made by ‪@svKaiser‬ as you see here (but on ‪@jnmartin84‬'s port). id Software was so impressed by this release, ‪@Nightdivestudios‬ would be further hired to make modern ports of some of their Quake games. Now in 2024 it was announced at QuakeCon that the KEX engine, that ‪@svKaiser‬ founded, will now be officially running the classic Doom games. This is a big team effort with ‪@Nightdivestudios‬, id Software, and Machine games. And to honor ‪@svKaiser‬'s contribution to the community, I am playing his Lost Levels on the Sega Dreamcast for the first time! I also wanted to show ‪@jnmartin84‬'s new fancy dynamic lighting for this port. It is the first time a Doom 64 source port has had dynamic lighting!
