According to sources, Nintendo is planning to release its next-generation console, tentatively called the Nintendo Switch 2, in the second half of 2024. Development kits have been sent to key partner studios. The new console is expected to be usable in portable mode, like the current Nintendo Switch, and may feature an LCD screen to keep costs down. It will still accept physical games via cartridges. Backwards compatibility for Switch games on the new console remains uncertain. Industry experts suggest that a 2024 launch is a strategic move for Nintendo, as it is projected to see declines in Switch hardware and software sales this year. The company historically launches hardware mid-cycle compared to PlayStation and Xbox. Convincing more casual fans to upgrade to the new system may be a challenge for Nintendo. If the console is released closer to Christmas, a deeper launch lineup is expected compared to the original Switch launch. Development for the new console appears to be progressing well, and Nikkei Asia previously reported that a product launch might not happen before spring 2025.
