Sword of Vermilion (Genesis/XB1) YTF Did Yu Suzuki Muck This Up?
Before Virtua Fighter, Yu Suzuki developed this godawful action RPG for the Sega Genesis. It was voted 1989's RPG of the Year by Video Games & Computer Entertainment, and I may never forgive them.
The real-time combat is an unsalvageable mess. Blind random encounters appear constantly as you explore. The game then dumps you into a randomly generated mob that will often pounce on your head and score cheap hits before you have a chance to get your bearings. Your sluggish character will eventually be able to shuffle his way toward a safe spot and hoist his sword wildly, while the AI enemies run around in circles until they run into your sword.
The rest of the game? Well... How much of this combat are you willing to suffer, just to experience it? The combat is constantly in the way.
