System Shock is back – the legendary 90s sci-fi action-adventure has been remastered and is now available in a modern format for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. In this review, I detail my experience with the remake, which has been eagerly anticipated since its announcement.
The atmosphere of Citadel Station has been brilliantly captured, and fans of the series can look forward to an impressive reinterpretation. The graphics, in particular, are truly eye-catching: the visuals are barely distinguishable on PC and console, creating a dense, gripping sci-fi atmosphere on each platform. The lighting, textures, and the reimagined SHODAN are highlights that bring System Shock into the modern age.
There is, however, some criticism of the controls: Even in the 1994 original, the mouse controls were more intuitive than what we find today in the PC version. This hasn't changed on PlayStation 5 and Xbox either – the controls are identical, which works well for console players, but feels a bit dated on the PC.
The puzzles are another weak point: They often seem artificially drawn out and slow down the flow of the game. Many puzzles are unnecessarily complicated, thus losing their appeal. This is particularly noticeable in the cyberspace section – here the gameplay becomes extremely sluggish and frustrating, significantly reducing the fun factor.
Despite these criticisms, System Shock Remake remains a strong overall package. The remake manages to capture the spirit of the original while delivering a modern gaming experience. For veterans, it's a nostalgic trip back to the 90s, and for newcomers, it's an exciting opportunity to experience one of the most important titles in video game history in a new light.
✅ Pros:
• Atmospheric reimagining of Citadel Station
• Graphics almost identical on PC and console, very well done
• Strong reimagining of SHODAN
• Intuitive controls on consoles
• Great atmosphere and sound design
❌ Cons:
• Controls on PC are dated and not as precise as in the original
• Puzzles are often unnecessarily bloated and too difficult
• Cyberspace sections become tedious and slow the flow of the game
The bottom line is that System Shock Remake is a must-buy for fans of the original and an exciting title for anyone who loves sci-fi horror and cyberpunk. Those with the patience for challenging puzzles will enjoy an intense gaming experience that brings the spirit of the 90s into 2023.
