Taika Waititi's Journey: Behind the Scenes of 'Next Goal Wins' amidst a Pandemic, TIFF23
Taika Waititi is no stranger to challenges. The acclaimed director of films like 'Jojo Rabbit' and 'Thor: Ragnarok' had to face a new one when he decided to make 'Next Goal Wins', a comedy-drama about the American Samoa national football team, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Waititi spoke to us at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered, about how he managed to pull it off.
"It was crazy, man. We had to deal with so many restrictions and protocols, but we also had a lot of fun. The cast and crew were amazing, and we felt like a family. We shot the film in Hawaii, which was beautiful, but also very isolated. We had to quarantine for two weeks before we could start filming, and then we had to test every day. We had to wear masks and keep our distance, except for the actors, who had to pretend like nothing was happening. It was surreal, but also very rewarding. I think we made something special."
