Talking Super Jeopardy! (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of GameTek's 1991 game show trivia game for the NES, Talking Super Jeopardy!
Talking Super Jeopardy! marked the fourth and final appearance of "everybody's favorite game of answers and questions" on the 8-bit NES, and it is the only one that wasn't developed solely for the console by prolific English development studio Rare.
It is a port of a Dos game that was created by a team of just four people, and instead of following the show's traditional format, it is based on the tournament-style Super Jeopardy! special that aired on ABC over the summer of 1990.
As was the case with the PC version (https://youtu.be/43M7VKh4QuY), the NES version of Talking Super Jeopardy!'s biggest selling point was the talking. The host, who is most definitely not Alex Trebek, introduces rounds and calls out question point values, and the voices are backed by samples of several of the show's iconic audio cues. The playback quality is excellent for the NES, and it's a marked improvement over the piercing, screechy sound of the PC version.
The gameplay is much the same as you'll find in Rare's Jeopardy! games, but I never found it quite as compelling to play. The text parser is a bit too finicky with what it considers an acceptable answer, and the inconsistent level of difficulty posed by the questions can be frustrating. Some of the categories are total cakewalks, while others are loaded with hyper-specific questions on specialized subject matter that feel out of place in a trivia game.
The graphics are also a bit rough. The question screens are all bathed in an eyeball-searing shade of pinkish-red, and though the characters are much better detailed than the ones in Rare's games, their off-putting designs lack the fun charm of Rare's ones.
Talking Super Jeopardy!'s audio is impressive, but the game itself isn't anything special. It's not a bad adaptation of Jeopardy!, but it's also not as good as the three NES games that came before it.
