40This is an arrangement of Francis Lai's main theme from the 1970 Paramount movie "Love Story." It has been arranged for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck.
This is hardly the sort of song that I'd call part of my - or the SNES audio processor's - wheelhouse, but it's one of my mom's all-time favorite themes, and since it's her birthday, I wanted to do something for her could I couldn't do just by throwing money at something nice.
I have to say that this was the most difficult arrangement I've done for the Super Nintendo bar none. The SPC700 deftly handles a great many things, but there's good reason why very few SNES soundtracks attempted realistic pianos, and why the few that did usually did it poorly. Piano music relies just as much on acoustics as it does on the sound that each key makes in isolation, and the hardware limit of 8 simultaneous voices doesn't leave much room for the sustain needed to create the appropriate sounding harmonics. That's why I didn't recreate the latter half of the song: I simply couldn't figure out a way to do a fully orchestrated backdrop without butchering the chords, and that's not to mention how much memory the multi-sampled piano instrument sucks up. I was bumping my head hard on that 64K limit on this one.
The clips are from the TurboGrafx version of Valis III, not that it's at all related to the music.
