The solution I try this episode is to try and have it both ways. Triggering alien retribution only when it's worth doing so - but then trying to inflict as much defensive attrition as possible when they come to complain about me ruining their stuff.
Attrition isn't glamorous, but in the end, there are billions of us and hundreds of them.
