Today I am getting my first look at the new DecaMove hip based navigation system. So what does this thing do? Well basically it gives the player wearing it a viewport that is locked to their hips vs the traditional head or hand orientation. The DecaMove is also intended to make movement in VR games feel more natural as it allows for players to have a decoupled head and hands in most all games that currently support head / gaze based navigation and free movement.

Now, this is really nothing new as there are a few games out there that already support decoupling of the head and hands, but upon reflection there are many that don't and this is where the DecaMove becomes very useful! I will admit that when I first got the device setup and jumped into a few games with it, I figured something was wrong because I didn't realize that all it did was decouple the head and hands.... I thought it was supposed to be some sort of walk in place sensor, but after a while I finally understood what it was doing and then it just clicked and I realized what a simple and subtle change this was.

In Onward for example, as in many other VR FPS games, there are only options for head and offhand navigation so this is where the DecaMove shines! I have been playing this game for years and finally I can run forward while looking and firing to either side without drifting in the direction of my gaze or where my offhand was pointing. Needless to say, but this definitely made gameplay feel more natural and gave the tactical advantage of more precise movement with way less drifting while turning my head. After playing more Onward I went on to test the DecaMove in many other games off camera and all had the same result of feeling much more natural with the hip based movement.

Overall I really didn't know what to expect from this device when I first received it and since what it does is so subtle it definitely took a while to notice and get used to the change, but now that I am using it I don't want to ever go back to gaze or hand based navigation again! The DecaMove can be purchased either standalone or as part of the upcoming DecaGear headset which is slated to launch later in 2021. Although I was very skeptical when the news of the DecaGear headset started making the rounds late last year, I am much more less so now that I have been in contact with them and have seen that their tech is legit! I want to again thank the DecaGear team for sending the Decamove Blogger Edition's out for all of us content VR creators to test and needless to say but I am very excited for and can't wait to see more of their upcoming tech now!
