An old legend tells about the events that happened in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the time that followed with evil returning, but no hero emerging. People remember the old legend, but no one knows what happened to the old kingdom of Hyrule...
In a place known as the Great Sea, Link lives with his grandma and his little sister Aryll on Outset Island. One day, which happens to be Link's birthday, a gigantic bird comes flying, holding a girl in its talons and being chased by a pirate ship. The bird gets hit by the ships catapult and drops the girl onto the island, who is then rescued by Link. But the bird comes back and takes Link's sister Aryll, mistaking her for the girl it was previously holding, instead. Now Link has to sail with these pirates to go and rescue his sister! But why is this bird kidnapping girls, and is someone controlling it?
At one point, early on in his quest, Link meets the boat known as the King of Red Lions, who becomes his companion and helps him out in his quest to save his sister, and maybe the whole world!
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is the first cel-shaded game in the Zelda-series, and the first game to feature Toon Link as the main character.
