Did Nintendo just Monopolize creature trainer JRPGS with their latest patent? Maybe not, but it's still bad news.
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company were just granted a U.S. patent on one of the most fundamental RPG mechanics: summoning a character to fight for you. What does this actually mean? Can Nintendo use this patent to crush competition like Palworld? Could it stifle creativity in RPGs, or even threaten franchises like SMT and Persona? Or is this patent narrower than it sounds — a legal tool aimed at copycats, not the entire RPG genre?
