Hobbits are a mysterious and enigmatic race in Middle-earth, frequently overshadowed by the more towering figures who dominate its history. Hobbits are little in stature and gentle by nature, with a preference for comfort, good food, and the peaceful pleasures of the home. However, did you know that there are several types of hobbits? These joyful individuals are classified as four types: three early ones with distinct characteristics and histories that blend together throughout time to become the third age hobbit type. This is not a ring of power, but rather established Tolkien lore. So, lets get started.
Hobbits are considered to be related to Men, but their exact origin is unknown. Some historians believe hobbits are a smaller and more secretive branch of the Younger Children of Ilúvatar, established alongside Men. They originally appeared in Middle-earth's chronicles during the early Third Age, leading a peaceful life in the Vales of Anduin, between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. They used to reside near the Northmen, but as the world's shadows darkened, they migrated westward, crossing the Misty Mountains in quest of safety. They eventually settled in a land between the River Baranduin and the Weather Hills, forming the Shire and other villages near Bree, where they had lived for generations.
They are well-known for their love of calm, comfort, and all things basic and healthy. However, their culture, as it exists today, is the result of a gradual evolution from a more diverse and nomadic past. Long before they settled in their beloved Shire, hobbits were a nomadic tribe separated into three factions: the Harfoots, the Stoors, and the Fallohides. Their migratory habits and different ways of life gradually merged, resulting in a distinct and rich society that embodies the best of all three hobbit species.
