All monsters are meant to be scary, in some way or another. But some monsters were created solely to scare people, namely children, into behaving properly. They go by many names across the world, but a common name for such a monster is the boogeyman. It can take any number of scary form: a phantom terror, ravenous beast, a cannibal hag, or even a shapeshifter that could match its victims' greatest fears. When the boogeyman has succeeded in scaring the daylight out of its prey, it would then whisk them away, never to return. A chilling legend, but how did the boogeyman, and creatures similar to it, come to be?
