The First Porsche 911 Turbo
36In 1973, the Porsche 911 model underwent an update. Although its 3-liter engine wasat the end of its life, modern vehicles could benefit from the insights learnt from turbocharging the 917 Can-Am racers. Porsche made its turbocharging technology premiere with the 911 Turbo at the 1974 Paris Engine Show, becoming a pioneer in the field. Louise Piich received the first 911 Turbo model for her 70th birthday in 1974 after seeing it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973. Although the assembly line had only intended to produce 500 pieces, the overwhelming demand required three manufacturing cycles. The primary 911 Turbo that was delivered to customers in1975 cost about $24,000.
