Allgemeine Spielinformationen:


The Forest wurde durch Filme wie The Descent – Abgrund des Grauens und Nackt und zerfleischt und Videospiele wie Minecraft und Don’t Starve inspiriert. Es ist seit 2013 auf Steam erhältlich. Endnight Games sagte, Disney sei insofern eine Inspiration für das Spiel gewesen, als dass es nicht nur "dunkel und bedrückend" sei. Die Entwickler sind dabei, das Spiel mit Oculus Rift kompatibel zu machen. Ebenso wollen sie einen Mehrspielermodus und einen Koop-Modus ins Spiel einfügen, jedoch sei kein Mehrspieler-Gefühl wie bei DayZ oder Rust geplant. Der Koop-Modus wurde in der Version Alpha 0.09 hinzugefügt.

Endnight Games begann die Entwicklung mit einer vierköpfigen Belegschaft, mittlerweile sind in dem Indie-Studio mehr als zehn Personen beschäftigt. Das Entwicklerteam arbeitete zuvor an visuellen Effekten für Filme wie The Amazing Spider-Man 2 und Tron: Legacy. The Forest nutzt ab der Version 0.16 die Unity 5 Engine anstelle ihrer Vorgängerversion.

Auf der PlayStation Experience wurde von Sony und den Entwicklern Endnight Games eine Version für die PlayStation 4 vorgestellt. Die Version erschien am 6. November 2018.
