Last Thursday, CNBC reported on the fact that AT&T is currently seeking sail for WB Games in a deal that could fetch about $4 billion. The telecommunications company acquired WBIE parent Time Warner in 2018, and today is almost at $200 billion in debt.

According to the website, potential buyers include Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, and two other companies that preferred not to be named publicly, but have privately demonstrated interest. Rumors suggest that one of them is Microsoft, however, no deal is assured or imminent.

WBIE owns a number of studios including TT Games, Rocksteady Studios, NetherRealm Studios, Monolith Productions, Avalanche Software, and WB Games Montreal, Boston, New York, San Diego, and San Francisco, as well as Portkey Games.

The division's output includes franchises such as the Middle-earth, Mortal Kombat, and Scribblenauts series, as well as gaming properties that would presumably remain in WB's possession in the event of a sale such as DC (Batman: Arkham, Lego games), and Harry Potter. So what could this mean for the future of WB Games and the projects currently in development?

It’s tough to tell right now what could happen to the games that have been in development ever since 2015. Depending on whom the buyer ends up being, they could either choose to scrap the projects and start fresh, set up a new slate of their own, or let the studios finish the games, and only further ahead do things according to their identity.

A few insiders, however, have claimed that regardless of the buyer, the
Batman game that has been teased by WB Montreal will not be canceled, and that it’s only supposed to be released next year -- but that “anything could happen between now and then”. Nothing is confirmed yet.

A day before all of this reached public knowledge, GWW reported
that DC is planning to host a multimedia virtual fan experience on August 22, currently titled “DC FanDome“, which will be accessible for a 24 hour period, starting at 10 am PDT, and will be a global event that promises new announcements from WB Games, Film, TV and their DC Comic Book branch.

It’s unknown how long a deal in which AT&T sells WB Games and all of its subsidiaries to another company could take, but the current plan, in case the report from GWW ends up being confirmed as legit, is to have WB Montreal’s - and possibly Rocksteady’s - game announced by the final days of August.

Only time holds all the answers, and from this day to August 22nd, never stop believing that an official game reveal from WB Games could actually happen, regardless of the deal either happening before, or after that date. It is a delicate situation, and the future of high quality open world DC games could indeed be compromised. Hope for the best.
