Iron Man continues to soar on his way to joining the billion dollar club and will probably be sitting pretty at number one at the box office until a certain crew of the Starship Enterprise arrive in theaters next week, but he'll have to face off against Leonardo DiCaprio and director Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby first. So is the 3D production of the classic American novel worth making it out to the theater for? For the most part, critics are mixed when it comes to the film, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 46 percent and MetaCritic giving it a slightly better 55 Metascore. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter called it "a hugely elaborate, well-cast adaptation of an American classic" and praised the casting. Rafer Guzman of Newsday agreed, calling it the "most entertaining Gatsby yet" and though points out the film does have some flaws, says Leonardo DiCaprio is the Gatsby to beat and saves the film from the few missteps it has. Lou Lumenick of the New York Post also thought the film had flaws and admits this Gatsby isn't great, but called it a welcome standout from the usual summer blockbusters. Of course, not everyone enjoyed the film or the performances. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal called it idiotic and noisy, while Peter Travers at Rolling Stone called it a "crushing disappointment" and, beyond the costumes, had nothing positive to say about it. Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly thought the casting was wrong, with Tobey Maguire being too old to play the "naive bumpkin narrator" and Carey Mulligan too boring to care about. They did give praise to Joel Edgerton as Mulligan's husband though. Overall, most critics felt the use of 3D was unnecessary, but tell us what you think?
