In this installment, I'll be doing a deep dive on The Haunting of Hill House, a new horror series on Netflix. The show is based on the classic 1959 novel of the same name written by Shirley Jackson. The book has been adapted for the silver screen a couple of times but this new series, due in large part to its scope, has been able to adapt and expand on the source material in ways that simply haven't been done before.

I'll just go ahead and state this right off the bat. The show isn't perfect. I've got issues with some elements of the writing. More on that later. But, with respect to the positives, the production value is extremely high, the acting is generally quite good, and on that note, I should commend the casting director because the kids and their adult analogues in this series are remarkably good matches. And, in general, I'd say that the show serves as a solid work of psychological horror. And just what exactly is meant by the term psychological horror? Well, in the case of Hill House, it's a work that delves into the respective psyches of its characters and, in an expertly horrific fashion, manifests their various deep-seated emotional issues and transfigures them into chilling visions and haunting apparitions. The supernatural elements of the work are organic extensions of the underlying dynamics of the relationships between major characters.
