The Command Vehicle is due to arrive at its destination in 10 days, we'd like to take advantage of aerobraking to slow us down without using fuel, but it's entirely possible we won't have complete details of the new planets on launch day. So, the commad ship carries with it a number of automated probes that can be used to check the gravity and atmospheres of planets and moons without actually sending a full sized ship.
