The Last of Us: Drowning (Spoilers Ahead)
Warning. Spoilers Ahead!
I think it’s quite possible that the fight with Abby was Ellie’s last time that she tried to kill someone, I think to heal, she needs to get far far away from any situation where she has to harm another human being. The whole scene of that final fight with Abby reminds me so much of that scene from the first part of "The Last of Us" when Joel gets attacked in the hotel and nearly gets drowned only to be saved by Ellie who kills a human being for the first time in her life to save Joel.
As Abby’s journey is so similar to Joel’s, it’s like she’s reliving this scene but Lev - Abby’s Ellie, I guess - is still incapacitated and so he can’t help her. So, it’s up to Ellie again to save a life, maybe saving her own life as well in doing so. Because, in a way, looking at her face, we see herself die as well, this is not the Ellie we got to know from when she was younger, she's barely human anymore. Maybe Abby did take Ellie's chance to reconcile with Joel when she killed him but by sparing Abby's life, Ellie can start her own process of making amends for what she did and thus, in a way, do what Joel wanted to do in the end. This way, she can be close to him again.
Anyway, that's my interpretation.
