As we begin our story we were met up with a father, who so dearly loved his daughter, who would do anything for his family. When loss took over his life he became a bit of a lifeless shell, just doing what he can to get by. We meet up with a kid, around his daughters age. He wants no part of it, whatever it may have been, but he was stuck with her till the end. He knew what might happen if he continued on the path that was chosen for him, but he felt, he had no choice. For his survival was based on Ellie's survival. As he tried to distance himself with her, she kept prying into his heart. He could not stand the thought of losing another loved one. Especially one that was like a second chance at being a father. So, what choice did he have but to fight for a family again. Joel's love for family is what makes him the way he is. He did not want to take the girl, but Tess decided it was the best option.
