The game opens during the initial outbreak, where Joel, a single father, tries to escape the chaos with his young daughter, Sarah, and his brother, Tommy. The two are approached by Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies, a rebel group fighting against the oppressive military regime. Marlene tasks them with smuggling Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, to a group of Fireflies outside the zone. The catch: Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps infection, making her the key to a potential cure.
Initially, Joel sees Ellie as nothing more than a job, and their relationship is strained. However, as they journey through a perilous landscape filled with Infected and hostile human factions, they begin to form a bond. Along the way, they encounter various characters, including Bill, a paranoid survivor; Henry and Sam, brothers trying to survive; and Tommy, Joel's estranged brother, who now leads a thriving community.
As they travel, Joel and Ellie face unimaginable horrors, from deadly encounters with Infected to betrayal and loss at the hands of desperate survivors. One of the most poignant moments occurs when Ellie saves Joel’s life during a brutal ambush, marking a turning point in their relationship. Joel, who had been reluctant to open up to Ellie, begins to see her as more than just cargo—she becomes a surrogate daughter, filling the void left by Sarah’s death.
Their journey takes them to the Firefly hospital in Salt Lake City, where Ellie is prepared to undergo surgery to create a vaccine. However, Joel discovers the horrifying truth: the surgery will kill Ellie, as the doctors need to extract the Cordyceps infection from her brain. Unable to accept losing Ellie, Joel goes on a rampage through the hospital, killing the Fireflies, including their leader, Marlene. He rescues Ellie, who is unconscious, and flees.
As they leave, Ellie questions Joel about what happened. He lies, telling her the Fireflies had stopped searching for a cure and that there were others like her who were immune but that nothing could be done. The story ends ambiguously, with Ellie appearing skeptical but choosing to accept Joel’s words—for now.
The Last of Us Part I is a masterful exploration of human resilience and the gray areas of morality. It asks the question: How far would you go to protect someone you love, even if it means dooming humanity?
