Though Moblins now occupy the building, a long history preceeds Sundown Castle.
The people of Sundown, bearing attributes resembling the Lizalfos, were the first to rise after Ganon's death. They built this castle in the mountains using Goron slaves.

When they found the Fire Medallion hidden away by Rauru, they attempted to obtain its powers. The castle was converted into a refinery collecting lava from the mountains in order to feed and overload the medallion. This backfired; the people were burned alive.
