Tears of the Kingdom takes place sometime after Breath of the Wild, where Link's victory on Calamity Ganon has allowed Hyrule's residents to restore it to its former glory. The game begins as Link and Princess Zelda investigate a mysterious event that cause residents health concerns near the castle. Beneath the castle, Link and Zelda finds Zonai ruins, telling the story of a great battle. Further, they accidentally awaken a mummy. The mummy's powers heavily damage Link and destroy the Master Sword, and cause the Hyrule Castle in the sky. The three fall below; Zelda is vanished with a mysterious artifact, while Link is rescued by an unknown presence. Link awakens in the Sky Islands and meets Rauru, who gave Link a prosthetic arm. Tasked by Zelda, Rauru assists Link to find Zelda behind a door, only to witness a vision of Zelda taking the Master Sword.
Link returns to Hyrule, learning that the earlier events, dubbed the "Upheaval", caused chaos into Hyrule. Link gains Purah's assistance to find Zelda, where mysterious reports has been found through Hyrule. In the Gerudo Desert, Link assists its chief Riju into stopping unusual sand shround and defeating Gibdos. In the Zora River, Link and Sidon team to cease a sludge that poison the water. In Rito Village, Link meets Tulin and the two defeat the source of an ongoing blizzard that threatens the Rito. In the Goron Village, Link finds a brainwashed Yunobo; upon reasoning him, the two fight a monster arising from the Death Mountain.
As Link finds similar artifacts, the region's Sage appears, gives their power to their successor, and reveals that long ago, during the Imprisoning War, Rauru, creator of Hyrule, led an army of Sages and Zonai to oppose the Demon King Ganondorf, who ended up with everyone dying when they overestimated Ganondorf's powers. Zelda, who has been brought in the past, tasks them to help Link, who in turn transforms into a dragon to restore the Master Sword. Link retrieves the Master Sword, and unaware of her current state, heads to Hyrule Castle to join Zelda as Purah seen her last. There, Link falls into Ganondorf's trap. Beneath the castle, Link combats Ganondorf's army before combatting Ganondorf himself. Turning into a dragon, Zelda assists Link into defeating Ganondorf. Zelda regains her physical appearance and the two fall onto the surface of Hyrule.
Some time later, the deceased Zonai bids goodbye to Zelda, while their successors vow to protect her and Hyrule.
