I was thinking a bit too far ahead and decided to do the next block puzzle. You can smash the ice on the 3rd block in here,and smash the ice in the center. You need to get a block on the next switch to open the door on the 2nd floor. Anyway,on the 2nd floor of the entrance hall,take out the ice enemy across from you if you can. In the center of this room is a chest with a heart piece if you use the swinging platforms to reach it. More ice and small enemies in the next room. We can continue north since we did the block puzzle already. Make your way to the room you haven't been in yet to find another key. Unlock the locked room further back and take out the 2 large ice enemies in here. Push the 2 blocks to the west to reveal the cannon we couldn't use earlier. Fire the cannonball into the newly exposed room and you can transfer it outside. Put it in the cannon outside and you can take out the monster at the top of the ladder to the west. Head into the nearby room where it was and you'll be ambushed by those lance users. Take them all out to finally get the boss key.
