13The Long Dark is an amazing but brutal survival game. Beyond playing the pure sandbox survival mode, there is also an amazing narrative experience for the game called Wintermute. I have been playing through the story mode of The Long Dark as my own introduction to the game, and I thought it would be a good idea to make a guide on how to get into and enjoy Wintermute--The Long Dark Story--for brand new players, or even players who have tried survival but not been able to get the hang of it. I feel that Wintermute gives you the basics to understand the survival elements of the game, but also serves up an excellent and mysterious story and is the ideal place to start for new players. In this guide for complete beginners to The Long Dark, I will start a brand new game of Wintermute on Survival difficulty and walk you through the basics of the controls, the UI, and tips and tricks to help you thrive in the beginning of the game and learn how to improve your chances of not freezing to death, starving, running out of water, or being eaten by wolves. This is a completely non-spoiler guide, meant only to help you learn the fundamentals so you can explore and enjoy the surprises The Long Dark offers on your own. This guide is meant for you to play along or watch to hear my thought process and see how everything is done within the flow and context of an actual game.
