The Lurker Necromorph Type Explained (Dead Space Remake Lore)
The Lurker is a Necromorph type that is specialised for ranged attacks, and which can do so from surfaces, and in zero G. They are seen in Dead Space and Dead Space Remake
A Lurker Necromorph is usually created from a Human baby, but can also result from other similar sized organisms.
Instead of using the hosts existing locomotion, they instead scuttle around on a number of tentacle-looking legs which grow from the underside, these function similar to insect legs, including granting the Lurker the ability to scale vertical surfaces, further aiding them to attack from afar, and avoid being approached, as they are still quite small and vulnerable at close-range.
Coiled within the former pelvic area underneath an articulating flap of skin, are three long, ropy tentacles, which unfurl when the Lurker has spotted a victim.
These strong and flexible appendages are able to launch barbs at high speed and with impressive accuracy, but can also be used to stab with.
The Lurker from Dead Space and Dead Space Remake functions to support the larger Necromorphs, and their small frame is treated more like a lump of biomass than an existing template, around which, the pathogen recombines it into an offensive form.
Backing up this hypothesis, is the presence of a Canine version of the Lurker, as seen in Dead Space 3, which can be found on board SCAF ships and on the surface of Tau Volantis. These dogs were part of a SCAF expedition project to help look for Marker artifacts.
So, the same Necromorph type can be made with different species; a phenomenon also seen with the Crawler type, which has both Human, and Tau Volantian variants.
It is hinted at, that Lurkers can develop inside the womb of an unsuspecting mother, or from infants growing in external artificial wombs, such as the so-called “organ banks” on the Ishimura.
An Enhanced variant of the Lurker exists, which has the same basic body structure as the regular Lurker, but is entirely black, and has glowing eyes, and which both deals, and is more resistant, to damage.
To combat the Lurker, it is best to target the three tentacles and try to sever them all off, and it’s recommended to keep an eye on the walls when doing so, as they are often seen in packs, so more than one may be present at a time.
Something I couldn’t help but notice, was how the way the Lurkers tentacles function bears a striking resemblance to those of the White Spike monsters from The Tomorrow War. I wonder if this design was where they got the idea from for those aliens in that movie.
