The man Real Madrid needed
What if Vicente del Bosque stayed at Real Madrid? #ucl #realmadrid
Everything was going swimmingly at Real Madrid, perhaps too swimmingly so in 2003 they decided to push the self-destruct button: Vicente del Bosque was gone.
There’s very few who bleed Real Madrid like Del Bosque, through his 445 La Liga appearances for the club as a player, or through his tireless work in the youth and academy teams in the 1980s and 90s. In 1999, he finally ascended to become permanent manager of Los Blancos.
After two Champions Leagues in three years, supplemented neatly by two more La Liga triumphs in 2001 and 2003: his contract wasn’t renewed.
Of the decision, sporting director Jorge Valdano stated: I know it’s a decision which flies in the face of what the man in the street wants, what the dressing room wants, but those who govern a club have to govern it.”
Today, we reverse the decision.
