The Matrix - Movie Review
"The Matrix" (1999) directed by Lana & Lilly Wachowski is an iconic classic and must watch for all movie-goers. If I were to only be able to watch one sci-fi film for the rest of my life I would probably choose this one.
Thomas Anderson, better known by his hacker alias Neo (Keanu Reeves) is woken up from "The Matrix," a simulated world designed to keep humans from realizing their existence is being docile batteries to their mechanical overlords. Neo meets another person who knows the truth named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), who brings him to the leader of the real world human resistance and legendary hacker Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Neo is prophesized by Morpheus as the one who will save humanity. After Neo takes the red pill and comes to accept the truth, he is trained in martial arts and is ready to try and destabilize The Matrix and liberate humanity.
The Matrix is a timeless classic which easily holds up by today's standards. This is one of those rare occurrences where I don't have any faults to say or criticisms, so I would personally declare this film the definition of perfection in it's genre. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss & Hugo Weaving all give their most legendary career defining performances in this film. The action is obviously extremely cool and is quite unique in it's depiction and abilities.
The Matrix also features an extremely interesting premise and universe. This entire film is basically one big metaphor for our very own real lives, and how we must choose to take our fates into our own hands if we want something to be changed. The dialogue is very memorable and there are plenty of iconic lines which are technically cheesy but delivered in a way that is easy to appreciate, respect, and take seriously. The film also goes above and beyond in it's locations and visuals, and offers a particularly goosebump-inducing climactic ending.
The Matrix is not overrated at all and more than holds up today. If you somehow haven't seen this one, then you must as soon as possible.
