The Origins of Roman Hostility Towards the Jews

Welcome to another episode of Research Reviews. In this episode we discuss the Origins of Roman Hostility Towards the Jews. Traditional explanations state that Jewish uniqueness, Greek literature and especially the Jewish Revolt of AD 66-70 led to the decline of Roman tolerance. I want to add another couple of factors upon this traditional explanation. Propaganda and opportunism. Emperor Vespasian took the throne and needed to build a new imperial dynasty. He chose the Jewish revolt as his vehicle to gain legitimacy, meaning he and his children consistently propagandised the war.
