How do the local conditions and histories matter for the creation and consumption of VR experiences? Do certain elements of a place become mistaken as universal? For VR experiences that hope to have widespread social impact, these questions are particularly salient as they can help identify barriers impeding adoption. This talk draws from an anthropological study of the VR community in Los Angeles, offering a case study for how the virtual is thoroughly grounded in place and history.
