But for some reason I, as are many others, am obsessed with it, thanks to the excellent execution of the simple concept.
From the moment you boot up Liar’s Bar it just feels good. The visual style, character models and animation are a step above what you would usually expect from a janky social deception game, but there’s enough room for expression and physical comedy that it still has that style of charm.
Set in a rough looking bar filled with anthropomorphic animals, the vibes are not exactly immaculate, but perfectly fit the style of the game. It feels sleazy and rough, which matches the tone given only one of the four players will avoid a fairly gruesome death come the end of the game. Despite the clearly violent nature of the place, it feels like a place I’d actually like to visit.

The animations are smooth, but the real charm comes from the ability to move your head in the first person view and look around the table. Smart players can use this to their advantage, or just to increase the entertainment factor, by making certain gestures or staring down their opponents if they think they have just lied. It adds to the drama, and when used well, makes watching Liar’s Bar as entertaining as playing, which makes it perfect fodder for the biggest streamers in the world.
Quite a lot of them have picked Liar’s Bar up over the last few days, propelling it up the Steam charts, well into the top 10. When an entertaining group gets together to play it, it’s undoubtedly a great watch and much better than a lot of the other social deception games that have proven popular.

Personally, I think this is somewhat down to the rapid pace, with rounds rarely lasting more than a couple of minutes and a full game being wrapped up within 20 quite often. Other social deception games can go on for hours and have quite a slow pace, but here every couple of minutes the players have to think quickly on their next move, which makes it all the more entertaining.

Of course, if you want to play it you’ll need a good group of friends you feel ok lying to, but even if, like me, you don’t have that, I’d recommend booting up some streams of the game to check it out. It doesn’t do anything crazy, but what it does do is near flawlessly executed, which for an indie game in the social deception genre is a rarity, and it’s worth checking out for that reason.
