During the “Last Supper” in 1993, the United States’ then-Deputy Defense Secretary William Perry invited defense executives to dinner and urged them to consolidate in anticipation of Pentagon budget cuts following the close of the Cold War. For almost a decade afterward the defense industry stagnated as the primes sat complacent during what seemed like the end of history. Since 2002, there has been a rebirth of the U.S. defense industry with the founding of modern, tech-enabled primes like SpaceX, Palantir, and Anduril alongside a broader ecosystem of military tech startups.
