The Rise and Fall and Rise of Klonoa
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series sees the return of a cult favourite mascot platformer; a character that has appeared in several Namco (and, later, Bandai Namco) games over two decades, but who remains awfully obscure by the standards of the major players in this genre.
It's not hard to see why. Every decision that the creators of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile made led to the creation of a game that is wonderfully unique - a game that's both cute and dark, both two-dimensional and rich with three-dimensional environments.
It's just a shame that this wasn't really what the gaming consumer public were looking for at the time. Nor, indeed, later, when the Wii remake attempted to bring the franchise back into vogue, only to be largely ignored by the gaming public.
The truth is, though, that good games can always be appreciated by willing players, regardless of industry trends in a certain moment. Thus, Klonoa has won an undying fanbase who appreciate the games for all of the unique decisions involved in their creation.
Now, as mascot platformers are seeing a revival, it's time for Klonoa to return once again. Who knows? Things might actually go well this time.
