1987’s Robocop is arguably the best sci-fi/ action movie of the eighties. A surprise hit, Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy, aka Robocop, became iconic, while director Paul Verhoeven became the era's most exciting, ultra-hardcore director. Yet, continuing the series proved tricky for its studio, Orion Pictures, with Verhoeven bailing on the second film. At the same time, Weller himself would opt out of the terrible third film, which was saddled with a PG-13, family-friendly style, which was a massive departure from the original, which almost nabbed an X-rating for its ultra-violence.

Eventually, the series was rebooted in 2014 with a big-budget remake with Joel Kinnaman in the lead, but it proved divisive among fans. In between, there were three Robocop TV series (one animated, two live-action) that were bargain basement versions of the character and almost killed the franchise for good. With Amazon now owning the rights to the franchise, it seems primed for yet another reboot. In this episode of Revisited, which is written, edited and narrated by Adam Walton, we dig into the entire franchise from day 1 to now.

Do any of the Robocop sequels live up to the original? Let us know in the comments!
