A new Rocketeer movie is in the works and we’ve got the details for you right now. The Rocketeer may finally be getting a sequel of sorts and with it a gender swap too! The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Walt Disney Pictures is developing a sequel slash reboot to their 1991 cult hit, The Rocketeer. We first told you about their plans for a new movie way back in 2012, but there had been no updates on the project until now. The studio has hired Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to write the script for the project that is being titled, The Rocketeers with The Jungle Book producer Brigham Taylor and for some reason NBA players Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil. The original film focused on a stunt pilot who discovers a rocket pack and suit that allowed him to fly around battling mobsters and Nazis. Billy Campbell played the title character, aka “Cliff Secord” in the film and the new movie will reportedly take place six year later with Secord having vanished while fighting Nazis. A new hero will take up the mantle, a young African-American female pilot, in an attempt to stop a corrupt scientist from stealing jetpack technology and selling it to the Russians. The gender swap was reportedly added as a way to differentiate the character from “Iron Man”, but a recent comic book storyline may make that a moot point. Earlier this month, Marvel announced that Tony Stark will step down as Iron Man in the comics and hand the suit over to a new character named “Riri Williams”, a 15 year-old science genius from MIT. It will be interesting to see if this alters the plans any for The Rocketeers. As for when we could potentially see The Rocketeers in theaters, the project is currently in the early stages and no director or stars are attached. The original film was a bit of a box office dud coming in 4th place in its opening weekend and only grossing around $47 million total, but the film became a hit thanks to home video. When we spoke to Furious 7 director James Wan at New York Comic Con in 2012, he expressed interest in rebooting The Rocketeer, but something tells us he may be too busy now with his Aquaman movie.
