During the third Monkey Island game's development, a new original story for an animated feature starring the main characters from the franchise also began. The movie was never produced, but fans believe it was the foundation for the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean films.

In The Secret of Monkey Island, a joke prompts the player to insert non-existing discs like Disc 22 or Disc 114. Unfortunately, LucasArts' Help Desk received so many serious questions about the missing discs that the joke was removed from later versions of the game.
