437The Shadow of THE LAST OF US: PART II | A Video Essay
This game has broken award records with its artistry, broken our hearts with its revealing depictions of raw humanity and broken the internet with its divisive narrative. Everyone who has played this game has been affected by it one way or another. Rather you personally loved the game or hated it, you have to admit that it drew some emotion out of you.
Though its release has long past, something about #TheLastOfUsPartII , similarly with its predecessor, sticks with us. The impact is felt in perhaps more facets of our lives than we realize; the nightmare-ish trauma and loss we experienced through the characters haunts us, with new lenses to see the world through and a daunting mirror in which we see ourselves.
In my playthroughs of The Last Of Us: Part II, I have found myself speechless and numb to the chaos and pain of the protagonists, and the antagonists. Who are both fused into the story with such care and respect for who they are, and for the perspective one may lose or gain over the course of the story. It amazes me how Naughty Dog was able to craft such an exhilarating and stunning piece of art; it astounds me further to see how the writing complimented the beautiful and poetic world this game portrays with such brilliant vibrance.
In this video essay, I talk extensively about the themes and philosophy of The Last Of Us: Part II, in particular their relations to Carl Jung's concept of 'the shadow'.
