The Sims 2 heralds sweeping changes from the original. The isometric view of The Sims is replaced by a full 3D environment. Sims experience life stages (baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder) which have them age from birth to death, and their genetics can be passed on to their children. Unlike the original The Sims, where the player can spend forever raising a Sim's skills, the aging system in The Sims 2 imposes a time limit on this before the Sims die. Sims' personalities are given an overhaul, with each Sim having an aspiration, wants, and fears.

The Sims 2, like its predecessor and successor games, is open-ended with few goals. Players can build and furnish homes for their Sims, in order to fulfill the Sims' motives. They can choose to focus on building their Sims' relationships and skills in order to advance through their careers or start a family. They can also focus on achieving a Sim's aspiration through the completion of wants and avoidance of fears.

The Sims 2 shipped with 3 pre-made neighborhoods; Pleasantview, which is a continuation of the original The Sims storyline 25 years later; Strangetown, a desert landscape with paranormal occurrences; and Veronaville, a neighborhood based on several plays by William Shakespeare. The Sims 2 also shipped with many pre-made Sims and families, including some Sims and families that first appeared in The Sims.

Crumplebottom family:

The Crumplebottom (Speaker Icon.svg Listen) family (sometimes written CrumpleBottom family) is a notable, sophisticated, and fairly wealthy family from Pleasantview. In most of their depictions, they seem to carry themselves as the most civilized people in town, sometimes even acting haughty. The family's last name hints towards the family's "uptight" behavior, suggesting that if a nearby Sim acts immodestly or in a wild manner, a family member would get his or her "bottom" in a "crumple". Another, more vulgar explanation for the Crumplebottom name is that the family appear to have a history of growing prune trees, as evidenced by the neutered variant of the Crumplebottom Prune Tree available for sale in The Sims: Hot Date. The prune has a reputation for giving people regular bowel movements, and the name "Crumplebottom" may have come about from an early family member's strong reaction to the fruit. The known members are Prudence, Simon, Agnes, Agatha, Beatrice, Belinda, Bianca, Mrs. CrumpleBottom, and Cornelia, who was a Crumplebottom before she married into the Goth family.

During their lifetime, the Crumplebottoms lived in Henford-on-Bagley, Sunset Valley and Pleasantview, but in The Sims 2 all of them are deceased save Mrs. CrumpleBottom, who's said to be a distant relative. Although she is the only true Crumplebottom left in-game, the family's blood still runs in the prominent Goth family. It is, however, implied that there are more distant family members still alive, although their identities are currently unknown.

In The Sims 3, Agnes Crumplebottom, the aunt of Mortimer Goth, makes an appearance as a young adult. Other than the grave of her late husband, Erik Darling, at her home, and the graves of her parents at her brother-in-law's house, she has no immediate family living near her, as they reside in a far away mansion, and she lives perpetually alone along the outskirts of town. According to her biography, she married Erik, but during their honeymoon, before she could even change her last name, he drowned. Whether or not her wealthy home is inherited from her husband, Agnes is a wealthy woman from the beginning, having a lavish, modern home with expensive furniture and decor and an expensive sports car. However, despite her lavish home, there is an empty room across her bedroom that appears to be half done: there is a depressingly dull crib and teddy bear in it, along with several walls empty while some lined with childish wallpaper, which hints that Agnes and Erik wanted children and were going to try for one.

In the town of Moonlight Falls, three Crumplebottom sister witches appear. Beatrice, Belinda, and Bianca — living together in a Victorian-era manor. They seem to bear a striking resemblance to Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell from Charmed.

There is a street named Crumplebottom Drive on the campus of Sim State University, perhaps implying some philanthropic work by the family for the university. The Crumplebottom family were referenced in The Sims Medieval. A skilled bard can perform a song named "Crumplebottom Waltz" with a fiddle.

In The Sims 4: Cottage Living, the Crumplebottom family resides in the town of Henford-on-Bagley. Agnes Crumplebottom can be seen around the countryside village hitting unsuspecting Sims with her infamous handbag. Agnes lives with her cousin, Agatha Crumplebottom.
