The Slasher Necromorph Type Explained (Dead Space Remake Lore)

The Slasher is the most commonly seen Necromorph type.
They are created from the reanimated corpse of a Human being, they retain most of their basic form but with a twisted and gruesome appearance.
Slashers stand upright and have sharp protrusions of bone creating scythe-like bladed weapons, these protrude from either the palms of the hands, or are connected to new arms which grow out from the shoulders.
Their main pair of arms are used for attacking and for balance while moving. They will also sometimes have a smaller set of vestigial arms, either the originals or newly grown ones out of the exposed abdominal area. These are either useless or sometimes used to hold onto prey while attacking.
During their transformation they will lose most of the skin from their face and sometimes the entire lower jaw, and will grow mandibles in it’s place.
Slashers are created either by the signal from the markers, which turn people insane, homicidal and suicidal, then transforms the bodies of them and their victims into the creatures;

Or alternately by an Infector type, which will attack by latching onto either a living human or a corpse, and enter it’s proboscis into them, turning them into a slasher Necromorph.

The purpose of the Slashers are to attack other humans, creating more bodies to be used as biomass for creating even more Necromorphs and spreading the infection.
As their name suggests, they will attack by slashing with their large blades which are capable of dismembering their victims. They will also grab hold of them and either stab or bite them.
They can move very fast, around Human sprinting-speed, and will usually rush their victims head on, but can also be stealthy and sneak up behind them or even play dead and lie in wait until their prey strays too close.
They will also move quickly through ventilation shafts to reach inaccessible areas, or to ambush prey.

There is a stronger variant called the enhanced slasher, these have a slightly different appearance with a darker colour and are more resistant to damage. The first one of these was seen when an Infector type necromorph infected the body of the USG Ishimura's Captain - Benjamin Mathias.
Body-shots alone are not enough to kill them, and even head shots from firearms or complete decapitation will do only slight damage.

The best tactic is to cut off their limbs with a cutting tool, such as a Plasma Cutter - this has proven to be the most effective method for defeating them.
Slashers have been encountered in all known Necromorph outbreaks where humans have been infected, including on the mining ship USG Ishimura, The Sprawl space station, and on the frozen planet Tau Volantis.

So that was an overview of the Necromorph Slashers from the dead space games. I always found them to be the scariest enemy type from the games and I think they have a really cool and creepy design, sort of like a zombie but far deadlier.
They are the classic enemy from the games and the most iconic Necromorph type, and are what will enter most people’s head’s when they think of Dead Space.

I remember when I first heard about the original first game when it was coming out back in 2008 in a PlayStation magazine, and it had a scary-looking picture of a Slasher biting the player, and I can remember thinking to myself “that looks like a scary game”.
And then now they’re remaking the game 14 years later, and I can’t believe it’s been that long since the original.
I remember enjoying the first game especially, and that was definitely my favourite of the trilogy, followed closely by 2, and then 3 was a bit of a mess, but still pretty good. And then I remember that Wii-mote light-gun one, which I liked as well.
I’m interested to see how the remake of Dead Space turns out, and it’s not long ‘til it releases.
I’ll be doing more lore videos leading up to it, and I’m thinking of maybe even doing a let’s play of the original, so make sure you have the notification bell set to “all” so you don’t miss those.
So I really do hope you enjoyed the video, if you did, make sure to hit the like button and leave a comment letting everyone know if you’re hyped for the remake and if you’re going to get it.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you next time.
