The Spirit Lake Massacre was a tragic event that took place in March 1857, when a Wahpekute band of Santee Sioux led by the renegade chief Inkpaduta (Scarlet Point) attacked scattered Iowa frontier settlements during a severe winter. The Sioux killed 35-40 settlers in their scattered holdings, took four young women captive, and headed north. The youngest captive, Abbie Gardner, was kept a few months before being ransomed in early summer. It was the last Native American attack on settlers in Iowa, but the events increased tensions between the Sioux and settlers in the Minnesota Territory 1.

Inkpaduta was a war chief of the Wahpekute Santee Dakota and was involved in the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre and the U.S.-Dakota War. Inkpaduta and his band were not included in treaty negotiations for Dakota land in 1851 and refused to recognize the treaty restrictions.
