The Stillborn Flogger | Mikoyan-Gurevich 23-01 "Faithless" | Peculiar Prototypes
217This abhorrent amalgamation of a Fishbed and a Flogger was almost the MiG-23 we all know and love. In 1964, the Mikoyan Design Bureau received the order to design and produce a tactical aircraft able to operate off short runways. They looked back on the success of the MiG-21 with its double delta wings and blown flaps technology and wanted to do the same with this new project. The new airframe would have the addition of two lift engines to assist in take-off and landings. The new project was designated the 23-01, NATO reporting name: Faithless.
However, many in the bureau considered the 23-01 project a waste of time, since the lift engines would be essentially dead weight after take-off that would severely degrade the aircraft’s performance. Additionally, the designers were fixated on the variable geometry wing layout of the American F-111 Aardvark, so much so that they wanted to pursue the concept in the 23-11 airframe.
