I moved out of my parents house in early 1981 so what do they do? Bought a 2600 to make sure I kept coming back :)
The story goes that my mother played an arcade game for the first time while on vacation. Circus Atari. She liked it and my sister told them you could play it at home with a new video game system. Only about $200 with the game. I was probably eating than much money's worth of food every month so I'm sure it was a bargain. I was back quite ofter for dinner and laundry and always got to play the atari as well.
