When I was a kid, I thought the suffering was the dankest shit going. It had unique enemy designs, lots of swearing and tons of ultra-violence where not only could you eviscerate enemy bodies, you were encouraged to. Years later, whilst the controls seem rather sticky and clunky now, the game itself held up remarkably well. The game has a dark and brooding atmosphere and it's easy to get lost in it, even with some of the pun names I was too young to realise before. I mean, Carnate island (Incarnate) and Dr Killjoy...Really?
Every time You gain kills whilst in insanity mode you will see a little bar filling up. This is kind of like a level-up bar, as every time it fills your smash attack gets stronger. I would recommend using insanity mode to max out your level as quick as possible, as the Area of Effect on the last level is huge and great at clearing out rooms of enemies, although less useful when trying not to kill other survivors.
There are three endings, a good, neutral and bad ending based on whether or not you decide to help, ignore or kill the remaining survivors of Carnate. In order to unlock all archives in Clem's notebook, you will need to achieve all three endings. Multiple playthroughs are not required, but may also help in unlocking Consuela's notebook, as a few areas are off the beaten track and missable.
I have edited in both these notebooks in their completed form at the end of the Walkthrough for those interested. I have also included the secret level at the beginning of the game. For those interested, interact with the crow inside the cage to hear some commentary from the developers.
There are two secret weapons of sorts. The flamethrower can first be constructed on Chapter 12, were both a gas can ( 2:23:35 ) and a bike pump ( 2:24:40 ) can first be found. There are other gas can's (which each provide 50 fuel) and other bike pumps (obsolete after the first) which can be found scattered throughout the game from this point onwards. As far as I am aware, however, these are the first two.
The gonzogun is the most powerful weapon in the game, killing anything except bosses in 1 hit. It holds only 20 rounds however and cannot be replenished. This secret gun can be found in chapter 16 ( 2:46:20).
