~~Video Description~~

Mud is an 'element' often discussed in military history, yet little understood. We usually associate it with bogged down baggage trains and tank treads- but for the people who had to experience it on the ground, it was so much more. Mud was a terror. It was Hell. That doesn't only apply to the First World War, either. While the trenches of Flanders are perhaps the most notorious example of this principle, it applied well to many other time periods as well, including the Napoleonic Era and the American Civil War. In this video, we'll examine some of the many primary accounts from these time periods and more which go into detail on exactly how horrible that putrescent slime could become.
